AsiaRooms.com - Head to Phuket for the King's Cup Regatta
Phuket's annual sailing extravaganza, the King's Cup Regatta, is due to begin on December 3rd.
PHUKET, THAILAND, November 09, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sailing fans will be out in force when the annual King's Cup Regatta returns to Phuket next month.
Due to run from Saturday December 3rd to Saturday December 10th this year, the regatta was inaugurated in 1987 and is now the biggest and most popular event of its kind in Asia.
As its name suggests, the King's Cup is a sailing extravaganza with royal patronage. The very first edition of this proud competition was organised to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King of Thailand.
The event has also gained a reputation for its social aspects over the years, with lively beach parties taking place throughout regatta week.
Kevin Whitcraft, president of the King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee, summed up the broad appeal of the event in a statement on the official website.
"If you were to ask any of the competitors that take part each year why they compete in the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, you will get as many answers as there are competitors," he said.
The week consists of two days of registration, briefings and practice, followed by five days of racing.
Spectators who visit the Royal Varuna Yacht Club will be able to see the many keelboats, catamarans and ocean cruisers as they head out to sea.
AsiaRooms.com recommends a wide range of Phuket hotels that could appeal to sailing enthusiasts, including the Patong Merlin Hotel.
